The little island of Sri Lanka is home to an abundance of natural resources, a culture rich in heritage, and a mighty people whose traditions have flourished across millennia. In 18th century Ceylon, these were the pillars upon which J. M. Robertson & Co. was founded.
The first coffee company to be established in Sri Lanka, J. M. Robertson & Co.
was founded by the house of Baring Brothers, London in 1845. The pioneers of coffee on the island led the charge in the specialty coffee trade utilizing Ceylon’s ideal climate and abundance of resources to cultivate and grow their expertise. Spreading their prowess across the coffee production chain, their coffee curing plant, Vauxhall Mills, was soon opened in Slave Island, Colombo, Ceylon. Here, the Baring Brothers issued brass tokens emblazoned with their sigil, each representing 18¾ cents, the amount paid at that time for picking clean coffee.
Over the years, their methods were perfected, making way for the diversification of the company, and welcoming their latest venture, Robertson & Co. Cafes, to the picture. Today, Robertson & Co. is instrumental in spearheading the comeback of specialty coffee on the island, combining centuries-old expertise with modern practices in technique, traceability, and international standards. Working alongside a network of growers, processors, and exporters, Robertson & Co. is fast-expanding their network of cafes around the world, guaranteeing a spectacular cup of coffee from bean to cup, wherever you may be.
